Gitex:Saudi Arabia's spending on IT rises 18.5% to 22.3b riyals

Riyadh: Spending on IT products and services by government, businesses and households in Saudi Arabia has expanded at a compound annual growth rate of 18.5 per cent to 22.3 billion (Dh21.8 billion) Saudi riyals in 2009, Minister of Economy and Planning and acting Minister of Communications and Information Technology Khalid Al Qusaibi, said after opening Gitex Saudi Arabia 2011 in Riyadh yesterday.
He added that investments are expected to touch 50 billion riyals by 2015.
Gitex Saudi Arabia 2011, being held at the Riyadh Exhibition Centre, is patronized by the Saudi Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT).
Gitex Saudi Arabia 2011 is the kingdom's leading IT industry event, a state-of-the-art platform specially dedicated to the latest ICT (information and communication technologies) products and innovations and the exchange of knowledge. The exhibition has the participation of the world's leading ICT players from the US, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
The event will also host a business-to-consumer event to showcase new products and services bringing the best offers in consumer electronics.
Speaking at the function, the minister said Gitex Saudi Arabia enjoys special importance as it sheds light on prominent developments in the ICT sector in the kingdom, adding that Saudi Arabia remains the largest ICT market in the region with strong growth in service demand.
He pointed out that the event is a good opportunity for local private sector establishments to present and promote their techniques in offering services and exchanges of expertise with their international peers.
International ICT companies would also benefit from opportunities in the kingdom and in the region in general.
